About Grade GS-10

Grade 10 is the least common grade other than GS-1 and GS-2, which are used only for low-level intern and trainee positions. So why are there so few GS-10 positions? It boils down to the different career paths common in the GS system.

Many administrative and clerical jobs range from GS-3 to GS-9 with all the inclusive grades being used. Scientific and engineering jobs range from GS-5 to GS-13, but the typical promotion pattern is to increase two grades at a time up to GS-11. Then GS-11, GS-12, and GS-13 are all used. These two career groups are the most common in the GS pay system and neither typically give GS-10's. As a result, there are very few GS-10's in the federal government.

Step Increases within GS-10

As employees gain more experience, they can receive in-grade step promotions. While step promotions generally do not correspond with an increase in authority or responsibility, they do provide a pay raise. Within the GS-10 paygrade, a single step increase will raise yearly base pay by a total of $1,884.00.

When you receive a paygrade promotion, you will maintain your previously attained step. For example, a GS-10 Step 3 employee who receives a paygrade promotion to GS-11 will now be paid at GS-11 Step 3. Read more about how step increases work.
