About Grade GS-13

GS-13 is the most common grade in the General Schedule Pay System. GS-13 is highest grade for many career tracks in the federal government. This means that once an employee reaches GS-13, the only way to continue increasing your pay is to change career tracks to supervisor or another career path that includes higher grades.

GS-13 is the lower end of the top-level pay grades in the GS system, which also includes GS-14 and GS-15. This pay grade range includes senior managers and technical specialists.

Step Increases within GS-13

As employees gain more experience, they can receive in-grade step promotions. While step promotions generally do not correspond with an increase in authority or responsibility, they do provide a pay raise. Within the GS-13 paygrade, a single step increase will raise yearly base pay by a total of $2,951.00.

When you receive a paygrade promotion, you will maintain your previously attained step. For example, a GS-13 Step 3 employee who receives a paygrade promotion to GS-14 will now be paid at GS-14 Step 3. Read more about how step increases work.
